JLPT N5 kanji list: all 103 kanji with meanings and readings
日本語能力試験 N5 漢字
The JLPT N5 is the first level of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. The test has not published an official kanji list since 2010, so learners study from lists. The most widely used one has 103 kanji, and it includes every kanji of the shorter 79-kanji list. Here they are, grouped by theme, with the English meaning, the on reading in katakana, the kun reading in hiragana, and the number of strokes.

- on is the reading that came from Chinese, written in katakana. It is used mostly in words of two or more kanji, like 学生 (gakusei, student).
- kun is the native Japanese reading, written in hiragana. Kana in ( ) are okurigana, written after the kanji: 大(きい) is written 大きい, “big”.
- — means the kanji has no kun reading in common use.
- Readings follow the official Jōyō kanji list. Only the readings a beginner meets are shown.

A simple way to study them
- Learn one theme at a time. Kanji that belong together, like 上 下 中 外 or 父 母 友, are easier to remember as a group.
- Learn words, not readings on their own: 一つ (hitotsu, one thing), 日曜日 (nichiyōbi, Sunday), 大きい (ōkii, big).
- Write each kanji by hand a few times. The shapes on this page are drawn in a textbook-style font, so they look the way you write them.
